Room 5 Rap Superstars had an epic rap battle against Room 2. MC Sativa was on the mic, unfortunately we didn't win this time. However we look forward to a rematch in term 4.

Sending a parcel in India

After reading "Sending a Parcel in India" the Justice League compared the process of sending parcels in New Zealand and India.

WALT - Compare and Contrast

In New Zealand if you want to send a parcel you usually wrap the parcel in bubble wrap, plastic or strong paper and send it off. In India sending a parcel is very different.

Wrapped - Skye/Priscilla
In New Zealand and India we both have to wrap up our parcels. But what do we wrap it in? People in New Zealand normally would wrap their parcels in bubble wrap, plastic or strong paper. In India you would use cloth and sealing wax to wrap parcels. We think that using bubble wrap, plastic or strong paper is best because it’s stronger and keeps the parcel more safe. Also with bubble wrap it keeps the parcel safe even if the bubbles are popped, it is also fun to receive bubble wrap around the parcel because then you can annoy your siblings and parents! In India using cloth and sealing wax is still a good way but we think it isn’t as good/strong as New Zealand’s way.

Sent from a post office - Dev/Israel
Both New Zealand and India have post offices such as NZ post. The post offices in Dehradun. In New Zealand post offices open at 9:00am and close at 5:00pm, while in India the post offices open at 8:00am and have a break for 3 hours at midday and then close at 4:00pm. I think that in the future that the India post offices should have shorter breaks so that the people who want to post things have to wait less.

Boxes - Arav
In India and New Zealand presents, gifts and other items are placed into boxes before being sent overseas. In India any type of box can be used such as empty shoe boxes, which you need to get from the shoe shop. In New Zealand you can buy a box from the post office which saves you more time. Overall I think I would rather use boxes from New Zealand post offices because they are stronger and better quality.

Charge
Another similarity shared by New Zealand and Indian post offices is that they charge customers for sending their parcels. In India they charge between $7 and $13 to send a parcel to Australia depending on if it is sent by sea or air. Whereas in New Zealand they could charge you as much as $250 to send a parcel to India. As you can see it is much cheaper to send a parcel from India although it may not be as reliable as sending mail from New Zealand.

Staff - Sherlyn/Kalani
In India and New Zealand post offices both have staff. In India the staff take 3 hour lunch breaks without another staff member taking over. Whereas in New Zealand the staff have other members to take over while they have their lunch breaks. In Indian post offices the staff sew your parcel and seal it tightly with sealing wax. In New Zealand post offices the staff weigh your parcel and place it into a bag safely for the parcel to be collected. In our opinion we would rather be posting parcels from New Zealand because waiting for three whole hours like in India would cause people to complain. Also it’s a lot quicker in New Zealand because they have a lot more staff.

Conclusion - Chantelle
In my opinion I would rather post a parcel from New Zealand because in New Zealand it may cost more but you can find all the things you need in the post office meaning it takes less time to post a parcel.   Whereas in India you have to travel around to find everything you need to post the parcel for example you need to go to a shoe shop to buy the box and you also need to go to a cloth shop to buy the cloth. Posting from India may also take all day. I would rather post a parcel from New  Zealand because In New Zealand they put bubble wrap on the outside of the parcel so the contents inside the parcel is still safe when received. Also in India they only seal it with wax so the contents of the box may break when the person receives it.

We believe our comparison is extended abstract because we made several comparisons and included opinions about which post office is best for sending parcels.

Is New Zealand a Global Superstar?

Is New Zealand a Global Superstar? By Kalani

Is New Zealand a global superstar? Being a global superstar means that a country is connected to the world through its imports, exports, businesses, art, culture and sports teams. New Zealand connects globally in all these ways and more. However some people may argue that New Zealand is not a global superstar.

One reason why we believe New Zealand is a global superstar is that the All Blacks have helped Rugby become more popular and helped boost the economy of countries. For example the All Blacks tickets for the Rugby World Cup sold out very quickly, because people wanted to see them compete against other overseas like Australia and also wanted to see the world famous Haka. The All Blacks boosts economies for overseas countries for example if an average ticket for the All Blacks VS Argentina cost 50 pounds and 80,000 people watched the game, 4 million pounds was earned from just the one game!

However some people think New Zealand is not a global superstar because the haka is not unique because other countries like Samoa, Fiji and Tonga have a haka that they can perform in Rugby games, so the All Blacks aren’t the only team that has a haka that they can perform.

One good reason why New Zealand is considered a global superstar is that many New Zealand businesses, like Kathmandu are performing successfully overseas. Kathmandu make a good profit by selling top quality winter-wear such as insulated jackets, warm trousers, gloves, camp tools, and hiking gear. Tourist from overseas countries, come to New Zealand to experience the great outdoors in New Zealand and also to purchase Kathmandu winter-wear in preparation for these outdoor adventures.

On the other hand some people may argue that New Zealand is not a global superstar because Kathmandu’s clothing is not made here in New Zealand, it is actually made in China. People may think Kathmandu is not a New Zealand company. The fact that their clothing is not 100% made in New Zealand reduces money for New Zealand’s economy.

Overall I believe New Zealand is a global superstar because New Zealand helps the global community. For example people from overseas countries come to New Zealand because their country may not be safe anymore and might be a very poor country to live in, also without New Zealand overseas countries like Australia would not have high quality dairy products, and also useful materials such as logs. Furthermore countries will miss out on money generated by New Zealand's world famous All Blacks.

Is New Zealand a Global Superstar? by Samarah

Is New Zealand a global superstar? Being a global superstar means that a country is connected to the world through its imports, exports, businesses, art, culture and sports teams. New Zealand connects globally in all these ways and more. However some people may argue that New Zealand is not a global superstar.

One reason why we believe New Zealand is a global superstar is that the All Blacks help make rugby popular and earn money for overseas countries. For example when the All Blacks went to Samoa, Samoa made lots of money because people had to book hotels, get souvenirs and go to restaurants. Another example of the All Blacks earning money for countries is if an average ticket for the All Blacks Vs Argentina cost 50 pounds and 80,000 people watched the game 4 million pounds was earned for just the one game.

However some people may argue that New Zealand is not a global superstar because other countries can produce the same products as New Zealand for e.g dairy. Other countries like India, America and England produce and export their own dairy products for e.g cheddar cheese, paneer and curd.

Another reason why New Zealand is considered a global superstar is that New Zealand exports unique products like greenstone, merino wool and other wool products. We export these products to Japan, China the United KIngdom and India. This makes New Zealand special because other countries can’t produce these high quality products.

On the other hand people may argue that New Zealand is not a global superstar because we can not maximise our ability to make products like clothes and cosmetics. We cannot compete against other big countries like China, France and the UK for manufacturing. In China businesses pay their workers very little compared to New Zealand. New Zealand has a minimum wage of $14.75 however in China there is no minimum wage.

Overall I believe New Zealand is a global superstar because we are connected to the world through our imports, exports, art, culture and sports teams. Without New Zealand the world would not have high quality dairy products, affordable materials such as logs and countries would miss out on money generated by the world famous All Blacks. Even though New Zealand is a small country it makes a big impact on the world.

Is New Zealand a Global Superstar? by Risa

Is New Zealand a global superstar? Being a global superstar means that a country is connected to the world through its imports, exports, businesses, art, culture and sports teams. New Zealand connects globally in all these ways and more. However some people may argue that New Zealand is not a global superstar.

One reason why we believe New Zealand is a global superstar is we export a lot of dairy products to countries that cannot produce their own dairy products.  Some countries don't have many cows because it is too hot for cows like the Pacific Island, Taiwan and many more.

However some people think New Zealand is not a global superstar because other countries can produce their own dairy products such as Australia, France and England.  Other countries dairy products aren't as good compared to New Zealand's because it might be too hot or too cold for the cows.

Another reason why New Zealand is considered a global superstar is that the haka represents Maori and encourages people to come to the All Blacks game to watch the haka. For the Argentina Vs All Blacks game the tickets sold out very quickly. I believe that the haka played a role in this.

However some people may think New Zealand is not a global superstar because other countries do the haka like Samoa, Tonga and other Pacific Islands. The haka is not unique to New Zealand so New Zealand cannot claim it as their own.

In the future I think New Zealand will boost its economy more and encourage people to come to New Zealand. We may produce more dairy products and earn more money from exports. If the All Blacks keep playing and earning money it will help New ZealandÅ› economy.

BANANA !!!

After reading "Twenty fingers on one hand" by Jill Macgregor the X-Men sequenced how bananas grow in Tonga.

Bananas are a delicious healthy, fruit that gives you potassium and vitamins. These fruits are popular amongst humans, monkeys and minions. Do you know how bananas grow in Tonga?

Tonga is a great place to grow bananas because it has lots of rain, warm temperatures and lots of sunshine.

First new banana plants grow from small suckers that appear around the base of a plant. Banana plants can grow very quickly.

Every week a new leaf unfolds. Underneath the leaves is a huge flower bud growing down. It’s covered in thick waxy leaves called ‘bracts’.

When the bracts curl back there are rows of long purple, pink flowers. Over the next few weeks these flowers turn into little green bananas. The little bananas grow down and slowly curve up.

The bananas get fatter and the colour of the skins changes from green to yellow. When the bananas are almost yellow the bunch is cut down and hung in a shady place.

If the bananas stay on the branch they may get overripe, burst and be eaten by ants. Once the bananas have turned a golden colour they are taken off the bunch and eaten.

In New Zealand we import a lot of our bananas from the Philippines and Ecuador. These bananas are different from the bananas in Tonga, they are often larger and not as sweet.

Life on the River

The Justice League used the app 'Strip Design' to summarise the key ideas in the story 'Life on the River'.

My day on the Apple Orchard

After reading "Apples Again!" The X-Men used visualisation to imagine what it would be like to live on an apple orchard.

My day on the Apple Orchard by Sativa

“Crunch, crunch” that's the sound of the juicy apples. “Crunch” as I bite into the red rose apple. I like it when it is the beginning of the apple season because we eat yummy delicious apple pudding’s like apple pie, crumble and shortcake. I can smell the fresh apples when doing my job. “Clump, clump” my job is to stamp the date on the boxes. Sometimes I work in the shed and it is tiring. I always get green stamp ink on my sweaty hands but it is worth it for all the yummy puddings.

Should the Haka be used to represent New Zealand Globally?

The 'Haka' group created their own 'Super Haka' incorporating elements from their own cultures Maori, Tongan, Samoan and Indian.

What would happen if New Zealand stopped producing dairy products?

The 'Dairy' group created these original flavoured ice creams. These ice creams were created for the countries that New Zealand exports dairy products to. The group wanted to combine quality New Zealand ice cream with some of the more popular flavours in those countries.

Should Kathmandu be able to use New Zealand's image to represent itself globally?

The 'Kathmandu' group designed these alternative logos for the brand using New Zealand imagery.

Are Maori tattoos something that belong to Maori, New Zealand or the world?

The 'Tattoo' Group created their own Maori tattoos to represent who they are and their life journey. These designs are original and were created out of respect for Maori culture.

Apples from the Orchard to Overseas

The X-Men used a SOLO sequence map to track the journey of apples from the orchard to overseas.

WALT - Sequence the journey of apples from the orchard to overseas

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Apples are a healthy fruit that are grown worldwide. Gala, Royal Gala and Braeburn are well-known varieties of apple that originated in New Zealand and are now grown widely around the world. Have you ever wondered how New Zealand apples get from the orchard to overseas?

Firstly (during the apple season) the ripe apples are picked from the trees. The apples are then gently tipped into a bin/bucket. This is done gently to stop the apples from getting bruised.

Afterwards a forklift truck takes the apples to the deep water dump. Here  the best apples float on the water into the grading shed.

Next the apples go into a grading machine and get sorted into sizes. Once sorted the packers pack the apples into boxes. These boxes are stamped with the date so people know they are fresh and know when the best before date is.

After that a truck takes the apples to the cool store. The apples are kept cool to stop the apples rotting. The boxes of sweet, crunchy apples are then taken on a truck to the port. At the port the boxes of apples are put on cargo ships and are sent overseas.

Life on the River

The Justice League after reading 'Life on the River' by Cushla Mahoney compared our lives in Auckland and the lives of the children who live on the Mekong River in Vietnam.

WALT - Compare and Contrast

How did you get to school today? If you paddled in a boat you probably live on the Mekong river in Vietnam. Life on one of the longest rivers in the world is very different from our lives in Auckland, New Zealand.

Travel to School - Kalani
Both children who live on the Mekong River and live in Auckland have to travel to school. On the Mekong River (Vietnam) the children have only one way to get to school, they jump into their boat and paddle straight through the waterways. This may look easy but is very hard because you have to paddle against the current. Whereas children in Auckland get to school in lots of different ways like getting driven by our parents, going by bus, walking to school if we live nearby or riding our bikes. Sometimes people get to school with their scooters. In my opinion I would rather travel the way that I do in Auckland because if I paddled to school it may waste some of my energy I need for learning.

Homes -Arav
In Vietnam they build their houses on stilts so when the water levels are too high it won’t
effect the houses and they won’t float away. In New Zealand we have houses built on grass or concrete not rivers. In my opinion living in a house on stilts would be a little scary because the water would keep rising and you wouldn’t feel safe.  I prefer to live in homes built on solid ground because there is no possibility of my house floating away.

Producers - Chantelle
In Vietnam many people produce products ranging from pineapples to rice these products are grown in an area called the bread basket. Once some fruits are picked they can be carved into animals and shapes. These animals and shapes are not able to be sent overseas but are sold to local people. Whereas in Auckland we produce a lot of products that are packaged and are able to be sent overseas.

Play Areas - Dev
Both New Zealand and Vietnam have play areas. In New Zealand there are playgrounds, pools, beaches and fields. In Vietnam their playground is the river. Children jump and swim in the river. I prefer to go on on New Zealand play areas because they are a lot of fun to play on and safe. Whereas the Vietnam children have a river as their playground. However the water of the river looks very dirty so it will probably make you sick and if you can’t swim you may drown.

Fame - Sherlyn
New Zealand and Vietnam are both famous for different reasons. Vietnam is famous for the Mekong River because it's one of the famous rivers in the world. Auckland is famous for being the largest city in New Zealand and is also famous for being the home of Eden Park and the Sky Tower. In my opinion I would rather live in Auckland not Vietnam because we are known worldwide in a good way for being clean and green whereas the Mekong River looks a bit dirty.

Conclusion - Priscilla
In my opinion I would rather live in Auckland instead on the Mekong Delta river in Vietnam. One reason is I would not like to play on rivers because they seem dangerous. Another reason why I would prefer to live in Auckland is because we don’t need to jump into a boat to go to school or other places, it is much easier to walk or be driven to school. In the future the people of the Mekong River may choose to move away from the river and build their houses on safer solid ground. Also the people of the Mekong may work on trying to clean the river by making sure no more pollution goes into the river.
